My Students

"Be the change you want to see in the world," is the quote I share with my students on a regular basis and words I live my life by daily. My students may only be in 3rd grade but I do my best to encourage them to understand the world around them and motivate them to be a part of the change we need.

My students are wonderful thinkers, believers and achievers when they are given the support and motivation they deserve.

Our school is nestled in a small urban community surrounded by train tracks, poverty, drugs and violence. We see the effects of these daily. Due to an extremely dedicated and supportive staff we have done a wonderful job creating a safe and motivating learning environment for our students. Our school has made a huge turn around in the last 3 years and we have made AYP(Adequate Yearly Progress) all 3 of those years!

My Project

Our students have a difficult time understanding the world outside of their community due to all of the obstacles they face. A classroom set of subscriptions to Time for Kids will allow the students to make connections to the outside world as well as understand nonfiction texts. My strongest belief for my classroom is creating an authentic learning experience. The Time for Kids magazines will become a major piece of our social studies units as we do not have a curriculum in our school. The students have an incredible desire to learn all about the world and what wonderful things they are completely capable of doing one day. I feel these subscriptions will allow them to view the world through a whole new perspective.

Providing these resources for my students will allow them to become worldly, since they are without the opportunity of leaving the community.

I am certain the students will absorb all of the wonderful information that these magazines provide.
