My Students

I typically hear, "no not math!, it's so hard" from struggling math students. If teaching math is not done in an engaging way, those students just shut down. By the end of this year, I want to hear my students cheer when it is time to do math. My biggest challenge is to close the gaps.

I work in a NYC public school.

My school is a Title 1 school with majority of students on free or reduced lunch. Despite their individual challenges, they come to school yearning to learn each day. Students struggling in reading and math are placed in small groups for intervention.

My Project

My vision for teaching Math AIS this year is to have my group of students split into different math stations. For example, the station will include: computers (working on IReady math), math skill games, problem solving task cards, and explain strategy task cards... This type of rotation will allow me to provide individualized instruction and conference time with students. Explain Your Reasoning! Math prompts will encourage my students to work with a partner and discuss and write about math. Often students just do the work, but have a hard time explaining their thinking. What's the Best Strategy? will allow my students to work together and see more than one strategy for solving problems and doing operations. This will allow them to work more independently and choose the strategy that works best for them. Plastic sleeves can be reused. My goal by the end of the year is for these students to graduate from my intervention group and hear them say, "I like math because I can do it!

To help keep them engaged and motivated, approaching math through games and task cards will make math fun.

Having students work collaboratively will encourage more meaningful math talk. "The only way to learn math is to do math." When my students meet with me, they will be in a more relaxed environment using the materials donated. My students will see math as fun and not boring. I am eager to hear them say, "Yes, Mrs. Silberman is here!" "We love math!"
