My Students

I teach amazing students in Harlem, NY. I teach 6th, 7th, and 8th grade at New Design Middle School. The majority of my students come from Harlem and the Bronx. I am constantly blown away by the hard work and attendance from my students. Before Covid, we had high attendance, and during Covid, that has translated to online learning. My students are helpful in a plethora of ways. We have a strong school culture revolving around NEST values which stand for; neighborly, engaged, studious, and teamwork. When students display these values, they are celebrated. Also, our mantra for the entirety of Covid is that we are, "New Design strong!"

I love all of the different personalities that my students have, and how every student brings something different to our classroom.

This is only my second year teaching, and I am constantly blown away at how smart, kind, and funny my students are, each in their individual way. Our strong culture has helped us get through the school year so far, but it is still not the same as being in an actual school building. Having more supplies for my students will help recreate that school environment as much as possible.

My Project

The supplies requested would be tools to make their learning visible to middle school science students in Harlem. I am requesting supplies to help me make learning fun and creative for them. Painting and sculpture supplies will help them turn projects into colorful masterpieces, which will also help make our school building more lively and beautiful, and feel more inviting. Having sculpture wire will allow students to build models of concepts taught in science, including DNA strands. Also, bright colorful paint will help them Crete projects on ecosystems.

I also would like some supplies so I can create material that is colorful and engaging for my students.

Printer ink and sharpie markers will help me create charts and visuals that will help students grasp complex ideas. Especially when we are in a blended setting, have an engaging workplace is beneficial to student engagement. I want my classroom in the school and out of school to feel conformable to my students, and provide visuals that allow the students to feel like they are in school and in a happy, nurturing environment.

These supplies will help my middle school science students bring their projects to the next level. They will create poster models with the paints, and also sculptures of DNA with the sculpture wire. I am very excited to participate in this opportunity and make the learning experience for my students as rich as possible.
