Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I am a special education teacher in a low-income/high poverty school district, educating students with intellectual disabilities and students on the Autism spectrum. I have eight terrific, eager to learn students, who show such great enthusiasm to learn each day. They need various types of supports to learn new skills in school including visual, auditory and tangible supports.

Every child is unique, whether they have a disability or not!

Although I provide an individualized learning program for each child, they have all helped me to understand that even the smallest steps of progression can sometimes be our greatest achievements. It is important that I give them a learning environment that is supportive to all of their needs, as well as a culture that is positive to learning.

My Project

Guided reading is an essential part of our daily schedule in class, but it does not get enough attention due to the lack of supplies. We are not just trying to teach our students to read one book, we are trying to teach them reading strategies that they will be able to use with any book! Whole group reading is an ineffective strategy if you are teaching reading strategies for any classroom, whether it is special education or general education, because there is no differentiation being done. We are not creating a conducive learning environment for our students if we do not meet their individual needs.

By donating to this project, you can assist in building and protecting my students reading abilities.

The requested materials such as the binders, binder dividers, and the tote containers for supplies will help to organize our guided reading groups at the tables, and provide an inviting area in the classroom for our students. The use of the highlighter tape, index cards, highlighters, etc. will aide the students in improving their abilities to organize their thoughts and the words in the text to become strong independent readers. With your help we can create a guided reading atmosphere where the students enjoy going to daily and enjoy learning to become independent readers.
