I teach at a public, Title I Impact school in Savannah- Chatham County. My school currently has 90% of the population receiving free or reduced lunch. The word impact by definition means to "have a strong effect on someone or something." As a teacher, this is my goal each day: to make the greatest positive impact on my students.
My students come from extremely diverse backgrounds.
My school is certified for English Language Learners that have recently moved to this country. The students come from many different countries around the world. Most of our ESOL students were forced to leave their country of origin because of war, persecution, and/ or extreme poverty. Oftentimes, these children come to us traumatized and find it difficult to adjust to their new surroundings. They are completely unfamiliar with the language and social norms of our country. Despite their plight, these children are expected to perform academically.
Regardless of being from a different country, a single-parent home, or a poverty-stricken neighborhood, my students are bright, energetic, and loving. My hope is to make the greatest impact on my students by offering them a safe and positive learning environment.
My Project
It is a lofty task as a teacher to inspire students to read for fun. BAM! POW! Cue the bright and exciting graphic novels and every student is excited to read. Even the most hesitant readers eagerly open up the graphic novels with excitement to see the adventures that await inside. Covid has significantly reduced student access to REAL books. With the ever-present spikes in the pandemic looming over the school system, students are often encouraged to read books on a digital platform. It is my goal to continue to put real books in my students' hands. I believe that students need a break from the screen to cuddle up with a book in their own space. These 52 graphic novels will help me accomplish the goal of opening a new world of reading for my students.
