Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Some of my students are still four years old. My class is a combination Transitional K and K class. Because many of them have never been in school, they have had limited exposure to letters, writing and books. My challenge is to expose them to as much writing, literature and learning as possible.

Living in an inner city infested with crime, poverty and gangs is the reality my students face on a daily basis.

They attend an urban public elementary school in which all of its fourteen hundred students participate in a federally funded free-lunch program. Most of my students are second language learners and many have parents with no or very limited English language skills. They are from low economic backgrounds, but are hard-working, inquisitive learners. My students are captivated by hands-on learning activities. They enjoy participating in class discussions. They also love music and dance.

My Project

Most recently, my students have entered the world of writing. They have discovered the power of converting speech to printed words. The requested word building puzzles and phonics train will help students apply the letter sound knowledge they are currently acquiring. The magnetic write and wipe sentence strips we are asking for will challenge my students to write their very own sentences. These sentence strips will also motivate my younger students to strive for higher level writing goals. The word building puzzles, phonics train and write and wipe sentences strips will be used in learning centers so that students are applying their knowledge in a low-anxiety environment. These games will provide multiple ways of practicing reading and writing skills, while capturing their interest.

Donations made towards the purchase of these word building puzzles and magnetic sentence strips will give my students repeated exposure to letters, letter sound knowledge, reading and writing.

This repeated exposure will build the reading and writing skills that are necessary for success in school. Furthermore, these materials will capture my students' interest and make learning fun. These engaging materials will also motivate my students to come to school every day.
