My Students

I have the privilege of working in a very diverse high school in Maryland.

I get to teach students coming from a wide range of backgrounds, and they each have something interesting and meaningful to bring to the classroom. I teach Biology, and while I am extremely passionate about the subject, many of my students come in with a lack of motivation or overall negative attitude towards science. Presenting students with boring lectures and worksheets on a daily basis is not going to fix that problem and isn't effective in helping me to share my love for science with my students. From my experience, whenever I can integrate hands-on, collaborative activities, the students are much more engaged and eager to learn. I hope to be able to provide them with more opportunities for interactive learning.

My Project

The materials that I am requesting include biology board games, DNA modeling activities, and a genetic disorder activity. Students will be able to interact with all of these materials in a meaningful way that will help to teach and reinforce material throughout the year. The use of these hands-on materials will allow students to apply and extend their knowledge of biological concepts, and in turn, increase understanding and retention. In looking at the materials, they allow for creativity from the teacher, which will allow me to put my own spin on how they are used and to use them for many years to come.

Hands-on materials are such an invaluable resource in the science classroom.

Science is an interactive discipline and throughout interactive lessons the students develop more of an interest in the subject. In the words of Piaget, "The principle goal of education is to create men who are capable of doing new things, not simply of repeating what other generations have done - men who are creative, inventive and discoverers."
