My students are amazing! They are intelligent, driven, curious, and kind. Because I work with a diverse student population, I am granted an opportunity to learn something new everyday.
Nina is a bibliophile who is developing her skills as an artist by interning for MASS ART. Brandon studies martial arts and is constantly reading Manga. Christopher introduced me to the "Shakespeare's Star Wars" series and the joy of bento box lunches. Calista is not only a member of the book club but also president of the greenhouse club and has been volunteering in the library for five years. Caroline has recently been inducted into national honor society, loves to travel, and is president of the book club. Irene is a dancer, poet, budding chef, and gardener.
I am proud of all the students who volunteer in the library. They are eager to help their school library become a better place for everyone in the school community.
It is important to study, but it is just as important to exercise. Our students do not take physical education after ninth grade, so that means for three years students are expected to sit still all day. For the many students who come to the library during their study halls, we have something besides sitting still planned.
Students who are full of energy and have difficult time staying seated will soon have the opportunity to move and study at the same time. We would like to get four Fitdesks for our library. Fitdesks are stationary bicycles with attached desks. These innovative desks are being used in college and university libraries too!
Troy University in Alabama has installed several Fitdesks in their library and have received positive results. We would like to see the same results here. Students will have the ability to study and move – all without the disruption of running around the library.
In Their Own Words
Our goal is to show students and teachers that the library is not just for bookworms but for athletes too. We also want to encourage students to become fit and healthy. We want to get four fitdesks for our library. The fitdesks will let students and teachers exercise while reading or working on a laptop. It is win-win for everyone.
This is an exciting leadership opportunity for all of us library volunteers. We are proud to take lead of this project. We will try to spread the word about this amazing new opportunity by word of mouth as well as social media, posters, and morning announcements. I will also contact the parent-teacher association.
This project is important to me because P.E. is a provided class for seventh, eighth, and ninth graders only, and a lot of upperclassman don't get the amount of exercise they need due to all the homework and some even have jobs. With this device, students will get the exercise they need and not have to take a lot of time out of their day. One problem that this project will solve is that a lot of kids cant sit still at all in our library which can be distracting. So with this, the kids that cannot stay still will be way less distracting, which helps them and other students focus.
