Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My leadership students are compassionate, thoughtful young people who are dedicated to changing the world. They live in traditionally low-income neighborhoods that are often surrounded by violence, yet our students strive every single day to make decisions to better both themselves and their community. Many will be the first in their families to go to college. They have seen great growth in their reading and academic abilities in our school and remain devoted to furthering their education.

My leadership students are dedicated to making their school a world-class place to learn and thrive, and they are eager to gain the skills necessary to make positive change at school and in their communities.

My Project

As a founding teacher of our school, I helped build our school's Student Council club during our first year. Ever since then, though, I've known that what our students really need to make a positive change in their school and the surrounding community is the structure of a class. This year, we finally got the opportunity to formalize our leadership class and provide our students with invaluable education on how to be leaders both at our school and beyond. Now that we are a fully-realized class, the students and I have sought out opportunities for them to learn how to be leaders from experts.

The students have chosen the Disney Youth Education Series as their dream opportunity to learn leadership skills from experts at Disneyland.

Students will get the chance to attend and participate in Disney's Approach to Leadership and Teamwork, a program at Disneyland where they "learn from Walt Disney's leadership strategies and apply them to achieve stronger collaboration skills, increase confidence and set a course for success." They will also get to explore the park as a class, something the students are so excited for because many have never been to Disneyland.

At our school, students are still figuring out how to be effective changemakers. They have big dreams and goals of helping their community, a small but passionate community that has been traditionally underserved. With this incredible program, they'll cultivate skills that will follow them to college and they'll be able to make meaningful bonds within that class that will help them to be successful at making their big dreams into big realities.
