My Students

Most of my students aren't able hold a pencil or cut and paste, but that won't stop them from learning! In our room, we come up with innovative ideas to reach our unique learners, including learning through movement, song, and technology.

My students are curious, energetic, and loving little boys.

They also all happen to have moderate to severe autism. This means on top of having the challenge of getting through an entire school day as a kindergartner, they also have the added challenge of having a disability. Having autism means many of my students are non-verbal, have severe sensory processing issues, and struggle with transitions and change. However, my boys still come into our classroom with huge grins on their faces and hugs all around. I feel so fortunate that my kids attend our school, which is a small brand new building in Brooklyn, where we exclusively serve students with moderate to severe disabilities. Our school is very tight-knit, and the teaching staff is always looking for new and engaging ways to help reach our students. Since we currently serve only kindergarten, and for many of our students, this is their first experience in school, we are working to show them school is a great place to be!

My Project

Most of my students require one on one teaching because of their significant learning and behavior challenges. The way this is accomplished in my room is through structured stations. My students rotate between working with me, with an assistant teacher, and working independently. Because of fine motor challenges and developmental delays, most of my students cannot write, cut, or glue. However, this doesn't stop them from learning new things every day! In order to meet my students' needs, we need all kinds of hands-on materials! My students learn best through kinesthetic activities that engage more than one sense. The alphabet bowling will get them up and moving, the locks will work on important fine motor skills, the sand sifting will help with ABC and number identification while also fulfilling their many sensory needs, and the number and counting box will be perfect for my students as many have not yet been exposed to these academic concepts.

My students may not be traditional learners, but they are just like any other wiggly 5 year old, who needs movement to learn!

These materials will give my students access to the academic content they deserve, which will in turn help prep them experience success not only in school, but in life. My students face lots of challenges, but in our room, we don't see these challenges as excuses; we see them as opportunities. Help give these deserving students a chance to learn in their own unique way!
