My Students

"Tell me and I forget, teach me and I may remember, involve me and I learn." Benjamin Franklin I would like to create a science center in my classroom that not just teaches students about their environment, but also involves them in it's exploration!

Although my kindergarten students are from a rural setting, they need the tools to help them get up close and personal with nature.

We are a school which highly values the study of science, but lacks the funds to stock science centers in individual classrooms. I would like to change that for my students. I still remember the giant magnifying glass my kindergarten teacher had almost 40 years ago and the awe I felt when I saw the veins of an oak leaf under it's glass. I want it to be an adventure every time my students go to our science center! I want them to look forward to science in the upper grades because they already have a mindset that science is fun. I loved it when my former college professor came for career day and did some demonstrations. Later when I asked my students what had been their favorite career, they all began to talk about the magician!

My Project

I want to bring living plants and creatures into the classroom for the students to observe on a daily basis. The students will connect with their environment as they provide basic needs for the living things in our classroom. The science center will consist of an observation area where students will observe insects, tadpoles, fish, turtles, plants at varying stages of growth and items from nature. Students will be encouraged to bring non-living items so they can observe them with the magnifying glasses. The science center will also consist of an experiment/discovery or activity area. Students will use magnets and eye droppers to conduct experiments and observations. The eyedroppers also build fine motor skills as well as eye hand coordination. They are great for estimating as well. Students at this young age love to discover what things a magnet will pick up. They are fascinated when one magnet pushes another! We will discuss safety for all equipment.

I want to teach my students to always be observant.

I want to encourage them to go on a friendly bug hunting expedition! I want to have a container to put the bug in! I want to bring the outside inside as much as I can. With your help and the purchase of these items we can make this an awesome science center that the kids will be begging to go to everyday!.
