My Students

My school is located in Queens, N.Y., the most culturally and ethnically diverse neighborhood in the world. The children who enter my classroom, come from all over NYC. As such, they carry with them a wealth of knowledge, that contributes to a dynamic classroom. My students include AP, general education, and special education students. In addition, many of my students also come from economically disadvantaged homes. Therefore, many times, resources are scarce.

In my classroom of 34 students, there are 30 different countries represented as a result of the cultural diversity that exists among my students.

They are eager to learn and motivated to push themselves to do their best. There is an atmosphere of acceptance and trust in our classroom that encourages students to step out of their comfort zone and challenge themselves to set high academic and social goals that they can work toward together.

My Project

Many students entering our high school as ninth graders are reading far below grade level. This causes them to shy away from reading for fear of shame if their peers realize that they cannot read well. Having graphic novels that are written a few grades below their grade level will enable them to read books that they can experience fluency and comprehension with while maintaining their interest.

A lifelong history as a struggling reader can cause a child to be resistant to learning to read and graphic novels can be their chance for success in developing a love for books.

Improving decoding and comprehension skills with books that they are capable of reading can unlock the confidence and motivation that they need to become successful readers.
