My Students

What makes the students at my school special? I could list 100 reasons and more. They stay after school with teachers until 6 PM to help us clean up. They start a city-wide campaign project to raise violence awareness. In the midst of turmoil they may be facing in their lives, they come to school with a smile on their face. I often find myself saying to other people, "our school has the best kids," and the more years I teach, the more in my heart I know this is true.

Our kids are the BEST and we love them with all our hearts.

Many of our kids at school haven't had the easiest childhoods. Some of them have experienced more trauma and difficulty than we will ever face in our lifetime. Yet, they are resilient, loving, intelligent and full of potential that is waiting to be unleashed to the world.

Our school is a Title I public NYC school located in the Bronx. 100% of our students receive free or reduced price lunch. Our students are immensely talented and have so much to offer. I feel truly blessed to play a part in their lives and hope you will too.

My Project

As an eighth grade teacher, I love reading Harper Lee's To Kill A Mockingbird with my students. Not only does this book challenge my students academically, but it also causes them to critically think about values and belief systems in society, as well as prejudices and stereotypes. This novel has opened the door to many conversations that have expanded my students' thinking and empathy towards others. Atticus Finch, one of the main characters of the novel says: "You never understand a person until you consider things from their point of view...until you climb into his skin and walk around in it." Reading this novel with my students helps them develop this essential life-skill of perspective taking.

After Harper Lee's recent death, the mass-market text edition of To Kill A Mockingbird has been recently terminated, which makes it incredibly difficult for us to purchase these novels for our students because of our limited budget.

Without funding from generous donors, we will be unable to teach To Kill A Mockingbird in our eighth grade classrooms, and our students will miss out on this amazing novel study and learning opportunity.

To quote Atticus Finch one last time, “Mockingbirds don’t do one thing but make music for us to enjoy... they don’t do one thing but sing their hearts out for us. That’s why it’s a sin to kill a mockingbird.” I believe it would be a sin to be unable to teach this life-changing novel. Please consider donating to this project, and keep the mockingbird of reading alive in our classrooms! I promise you are sowing into GREAT ground :-).
