My Students

Edwin Powell Hubble once said, "Equipped with his five senses, man explores the universe around him and calls the adventure Science." My students come prepared each day to go on an adventure in science. By the end of the school year, I want my students to have the desire learn science on their own.

At the J.

School, I teach two equally wonderful 5th grade classes in math and science. The J. School, a Title I school, is a hard-working, multi-cultural family with a purpose: to achieve proficiency in all areas. Our stable, dedicated staff is committed to providing an instructional program that is standards driven, rigorous, and relevant in a structured, safe environment. We maintain high expectations for all students; we believe in our students and we expect success. To insure that all learners achieve, we provide a bilingual program, instructional modifications, special needs accommodations and individualized attention whenever necessary. Another high priority at J. is the appreciation of cultural diversity, which is evident in all aspects of our school program. Students understand and respect the variety of cultures represented at J., and have the opportunity to celebrate this unique gift.

My Project

Science is more than a school subject, or the periodic table, or the properties of waves. It is an approach to the world, a critical way to understand and explore and engage with the world, and then have the capacity to change that world. In my classroom, I attempt to make as many opportunities as possible for hands-on experiences. These experiences allow for students to make real world connections needed to be successful. This activity will allow students to make concrete connections to electricity and electronics through the use of hands-on materials.

These snap circuits for my classroom project will allow the students to better understand electricity.

Everything just snaps together like building blocks, and there's no need for screwdrivers, soldering irons, electrical tape or testers. The instruction manual is easy to read, and includes diagrams for 101 projects. With a little help for the first few, a child can easily work their way through the book learning the skills of how to read directions as well as important science concepts.
