This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Imagine arriving in a new country and having to prep and pass a high stakes test that you can hardly read and comprehend in order to graduate high school. Being engaged in test preparation materials can be boring and my students need technology in order to keep them motivated and engaged!

My students live in one of the most diverse neighborhoods in the United States - Elmhurst, Queens, NY.

They come from countries from around the world and have varying language proficiency levels. The large school is over crowded, with 3000 students and 9 periods, plus extended time classes, which most of my students take in order to make up classes they cannot pass. The school's graduation rate is 68% and all students must pass high stakes New York State Regents exams in order to graduate. However, most English Language Learners have a hard time passing, and many of them fall behind or drop out after becoming discouraged in passing such exams. Last year, only about 30% of our ESL students passed the English Regents exam.

My Project

I teach two intermediate and Regents exam preparation classes for students who have failed the test more than once. Test materials and activities can be very daunting for my students. I want to get an iPad for my class so that I can prepare multiple choice questions students can respond to on the iPad. I also want to use it for students to write answers on and have it projected onto our classroom projector/SmartBoard.

As a new teacher, I'm still learning how to manage my students and create materials that inspire and motivate them.

I want to show them that the Regents exam isn't impossible to pass and that there are ways to make it easier to comprehend. Your support will help my students become more engaged in the course materials and hopefully feel more motivated to keep coming to class.
