This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
"Remember boys and girls, I want to see your best sentences. I want to see capital letters, end marks, and lots of details." This is what my students strive for every time they pick up their pencils during writing time.
Our school is a Title 1 school.
Our student population is made up of over 90% English Language Learners. We have a good amount of students who are newcomers to the country and are experiencing their first exposure to the English language. Our Kindergarteners consist of students who are experiencing school for the first time; making them very shy at the beginning of the year. They come to us wanting to take in everything they see, hear, touch, smell, and taste. They literally are like little sponges. They also come with huge imaginations ready to run free. With our little ones, there is never a dull moment.
My Project
Writing journals for our students is not just a wish but a critical necessity. The writing component of our Language Arts program is very rigorous. These tiny students will be experiencing the writing process from day one. With these writing journals, our students will begin the long journey of just learning how to write their name and the alphabet, to creating beautiful detailed sentences and gorgeous illustrations. They will use the journals not just for Language Arts but for English Language Development, Science, Social Studies, and Health. Throughout the year they will be able to look back and see their amazing progress, express their ideas, and create amazing stories by letting their imaginations run wild.
By helping us reach our goal of attaining these writing journals our students will be able to keep a year long record of their experiences, opinions, and stories.
They will be able to not just see how they have grown but they will gain confidence within themselves by having a visual reminder of how their writing has improved. Students who might be shy will be able to express themselves and slowly become confident in sharing their ideas that they have written down.
