Help Ms. m.

I am a special education teacher at the PS 345, a Title I school located in the East New York area where over 98% of the students eat free lunch. My proposal is for a class pack of leap-frog learning pads for my students. This learning system is comprised of interactive fiction and nonfiction books on a wide range of subject areas, including Phonics, Reading, Language Development, Music, Math, Science, and Social Studies. I believe that the leap-pad learning systems would encourage my students to read and spell more independently during independent reading and center time. The individual leap-pads would also assist the struggling readers in my class by making them feel more comfortable reading at their own pace and practicing their letter sounds and recognition without a feeling of fear or being ashamed to do it in the presence of their classmates who are at a higher level than they are. The leap-pad program is necessary because many of my students do not have anyone to assist them with their reading or their phonics activities when they leave school. This learning system would also benefit my students by fostering their love of reading and encouraging them to read in a community where so few of my students are able to go to the library. Another added advantage is that the reading practice gained through the leap-pad learning program would also boost their test scores. Thank you for considering this proposal.
