Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

For most kids, a lifelong love of reading begins with fiction. Do you remember the thrill you got when you were first able to open a book and embark on a delightful flight of fancy all by yourself? Now imagine your early reading experience without access to fiction books to fuel your enthusiasm...

I teach at a title 1 school in the South Bronx.

In many cases, the classroom environment is the only place where my students have access to books. The majority of my students this upcoming school year were with me last year in kindergarten. Throughout the year they, their parents and I all worked hard to build the foundations of literacy; €to teach them sight words, early phonics skills and comprehension strategies. Having been granted the opportunity to loop with my class to first grade, I can't wait to pick up where we left off and help these wonderful kids make the leap from emergent to well-developed readers.

My Project

There is, however, one major problem standing in our way. The classroom my students and I will inherit this fall is almost completely devoid of books. The teacher who occupied that space last year had to independently acquire all her own materials, and is quite understandably taking them with her for the use of her new class. This leaves me and my students with a serious problem. How can I help them strengthen their reading skills without high quality books available on their various reading levels? Instead of Basal readers, our literacy curriculum is based on students having access to a variety of authentic books at each reading level, across a range of genres. Thanks to the generosity of several donors, I have obtained funding for the non-fiction books my students need. Now, I am seeking funding for the leveled fiction books that will allow them to build different skills, such as understanding characters and plot, drawing conclusions and making inferences, to name only a few.

My students absolutely love to read.

They deserve a chance to build important literacy skills and at the same time fall in love with fiction. Please help me provide them with the range of books they will need to be inspired and challenged all year long!
