My Project

I remember the first time I told students there was more to light than just what comes out of a light bulb. That inside the light, there is a very specific signature you can see and analyze to figure out not only what elements are making that light, but if you look at the light coming from planets or stars, you would even be able to tell if there are aliens there. That hook always captures the imagination of all my students, regardless of where they came from. A very diverse group, my students come from a wide socioeconomic and ethnically diversified background, everything from highly accelerated students to students with special needs.

These items will help my students reach that sense of awe and joy that makes science so wonderful.

All good teaching requires using multiple strategies, resources, and tools so that all learners can access the curriculum. The laser creates a visible beam that when concentrated can pop balloons. The gas tubes I want emit a signature that only the diffraction grating glasses will reveal. For many of my students, Science is their favorite class because it’s actually "hands-on" and demos like these capture just how remarkable our world can be. I recently had a student tell me she wanted to be an astrophysicist. These objects will actually allow a glimpse into Astrophysics, to look at the light of different elements to see their signature, which allows scientists to analyze different planets and stars so far away. How cool is that!
