My Students

How can we possibly understand the courage it took for ordinary citizens to help those in need during WWII and the Jewish Holocaust? More importantly, how can we keep the heroism and courage of the 1930's and 40's alive in today's world?

I teach English to students who are labeled "at-risk" and who are in danger of not graduating high school.

These students are not intellectually inferior by any means, but have issues that may prevent them from graduating high school. In order to keep these students involved in school and in their community, I hope to engage them in a deep study of the Holocaust during their senior year of high school. These students don't have the best lives, but they care deeply about the world around them and want to make a difference in their communities.

My Project

My students are caring individuals. Every year, I allow my juniors to select the theme for their senior year. This year, the juniors in my class voted (almost unanimously) to study the Holocaust. It is always interesting to me how well students respond to issues of human rights. There are a ton of stereotypes about teens and how they only care about themselves, but I think that today's teens are more connected to history and struggles for human rights than ever before. I hope to honor their choice to study this important time in history and to help these students apply their learning to our local community. These students are ready to care and are open to learning; please help me to provide this experience to them!

Issues of human rights are universal and timeless.

Teens love stories of where good triumphs over evil, and these stories will show true survivors, true heroes of the everyday variety. Hopefully, this experience will translate into a heightened consciousness and a meaningful course of study for my at-risk seniors.
