My Students

I teach 4th grade special education in a low income area, where a majority of my students are English Language Learners and a lot of their parents speak little to no English. We are constantly encouraging our students to read, but it’s difficult for them to be motivated or really understand books they cannot connect to. My special education students struggle to find accessible books for them that are interesting and on their level. The English Language Learners have difficulty reading books that they don’t culturally understand or connect to and therefore struggle to pick books that they can read. Our local public library is under construction, and because of their parents need to work, taking the bus or train to another library is almost impossible. I’m hoping to purchase books for the classroom library that are accessible, interesting, and that my kids can connect to.

My Project

These books will motivate my students to pick up more books, making their love of reading and their reading abilities go up. By having this assortment of books to explore, my students will read and make new experiences, while connecting to their own experiences already, making learning a full circle for them inside and outside of school. Kids get better at reading by reading. Having these selections in their library will motivate them to read and pick up

the next book in the series or by the same author, helping them raise their reading abilities.

Finally, a student who can’t go to the public library has a great selection to chose from right in their classroom.
