My Students

My students are a diverse group with a shared desire to learn about United States history. Many of my students are recent immigrants to the country and are in the process of learning the language and academic content at the same time!

My students benefit from having the material presented in a variety of ways.

They especially benefit from visuals - paintings, still photographs and short video clips. This is true of all students, but especially those who are new to the country and don't bring the same background knowledge native-born students have.

My Project

I use Google Chromebooks daily in my U.S. History classes. Textbooks just don't reach my students - especially the English Language Learners. Using Google Classroom (which students need computers to access), I can modify documents and activities to meet my students' individual needs. I am requesting a Chromebook.

Giving students online access allows me to use images, modified primary and secondary sources, and images to help all students understand the daily topic.

For example, while higher-level students might read about how women's fashion changed in the 1920s, low-level English-Language Learners can compare and contrast photographs of women from the 1890s and 1920s. That way, students are on the same topic, but given differentiated ways to understand that topic. Being able to modify students documents online via Google Classroom makes this a seamless process, and helps cut down on paper consumption since I don't have to make hundreds of copies!
