We are a low income, inner city elementary school that has a very diverse population, and most students are low income and receive free meals. We are now a K0-8th grade school. We have over 975 students in our school. We have a large English as a Second Language population. A large portion of our students come from many different countries. We have Regular Ed, Special Ed, Advanced Work Class, SEI, Early Childhood, Inclusion, as well as Developmentally Delayed classrooms.
Many of our children have suffered tremendous loss, or other traumatic events in their young lives.
We strive to give them a warm, safe, inviting, learning environment, to help foster their growth and love of learning. This is not an easy task on most days, but anything we can do to help and guide them into becoming successful in learning at their own pace, is one of the things we strive for most.
Any tools I can acquire along the way to help guide our students into becoming happy, healthy, productive members of society will make a big difference in their lives as well as mine.
My Project
We have an amazing school library, but it is missing one important tool that will ensure our students future, Chromebooks! All of our testing is administered on Chromebooks. We have shared Chromebooks at each grade level, but we are in dire need of these important tools in our school’s library. If we had access to these Chromebooks in our library we could utilize them for projects, access necessary tools and information, practice our computer skills, and would provide a much needed tool to foster our technology skills.
Access to technology is very important in our fast growing world.
Most of our students do not have access to computers at home. Our classrooms share Chrome carts at each grade level and students only have access a few times a week. Since students test on Chromebooks frequently throughout the school year, they need to practice their computer skills more often. Students should be able to come into the library to select books, but also be able to use technology as a tool for their continued educational success.
Now that we have Middle School students, it is even more important for our Library to become a Media Center as well. Providing Chromebook access at anytime during the day for all students has been a dream of mine for years, and I’m hoping that through Donors Choose this can become a reality for my students. We have the space we just need the proper technological tools to make it happen!
