Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Give this project a boost!
A chain reaction of support starts with one share.
Do you remember the feeling of finishing a project that you worked really hard on? This year, I am the K-5 Writing Enrichment Teacher at P.S. 91 in the Bronx. My students benefit from authentic, hands on, project based writing activities that keep them excited for whats to come as the year goes on!
My students are creative and inventive authors and illustrators who are being taken through the writing process to publish their very own stories!
Each of my grades are working on different projects from picture books that tell a story, to comic books with strong characters and plots. As the writing teacher in an impoverished urban area, I found that writing has a bad reputation among the students. They weren’t excited for me to come into the classroom. However, they are beginning to see themselves as part of the writing community and many are finding their own special style and technique.
My Project
What event can create a buzz across many grade levels, foster parent involvement, and inspire students? An author visit!
An author visit provides the whole school with a common learning experience and lends authenticity and credibility to the reading and writing process.
As a teacher in a Title I school, 95% of my students on free or reduced lunch. I think that this is not only a great way to inspire excitement and give my students a goal to work towards but a great way to get the parents involved in their students learning and the school community. My hope is that Mr. Catalanotto will provide my students with a strong role model and a life long experience that will foster an admiration for the writing process.
