Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Cherryland Elementary is an urban public school in unincorporated Hayward. Most of our students are on a free or reduced price lunch program and field trip money is often hard to come by. I work with all of the students in grades K-6 in a nutrition and gardening program aimed at teaching healthy habits through our large organic garden. We do everything from cooking lessons, environmental education games, to plant experiments and insect observations. All of my lessons are designed to teach California science standards and tailored to meet the needs of students at each grade level. In the four years this program has existed at Cherryland School, we have grown a whole crop of avid gardeners, kiwi-munchers and insect enthusiasts. With your help, 120 fourth grade students will create their own Bug Zoo with specimens of Coleoptera, Formicidae, Mantodia and Gromphadorhina, (also known as beetles, ants, praying mantises and even Madagascar Hissing Cockroaches!) Students will learn about the insects, record their observations and create brochures and informational presentations on these fascinating insects. They will then share their work with the other students in our school by inviting them to visit the Bug Zoo and learn about these fabulous and under-appreciated creatures. All of the 800 students at Cherryland will have a chance to take an on-site field trip to visit our Bug Zoo. Fourth grade tour guides will give presentations in Spanish and English, since many of our students are English Language Learners. All of our teachers will be invited to bring their classes to the Bug Zoo. What a wonderful way to discover the interesting world of insects! After this experience, students will learn to think before they squish. Insects play a very important role on our planet and students will garner a new appreciation for the world beneath their feet when they observe these live animals and create habitats for them. Fourth graders at Cherryland Elementary need hands-on experiences to discover a healthy respect for creepy crawlies, and all the other students in our school will benefit from their efforts. With your donation, we will be able to purchase educational materials, large diagrams of insect species, hand-held magnifiers for students to get up close and personal, several different types of habitats and live insects. We'd love for you to come and take a tour of our Bug Zoo!
