Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are a perfect example of the "at-risk" students in our population. All of the families in my classroom are classified as socioeconomically disadvantaged and qualify for free lunch. The majority of the class (73%) are classified as ELs and, according to Dibels BOY scores, all but one of my students are performing way-below benchmark. After a year and a half of distance learning, my students need extra tools to support their learning in the classroom!

My students are quick-witted, compassionate, curious, and motivated!

They do not let their disadvantages discourage them from learning about the world around them. In fact, they are outspoken and easily ask for help when needed. They are aware of their faults, however, they believe in the "power of yet" and know that they can only grow. They are not afraid to make mistakes because they know that it is a step towards learning.

My Project

Hello everyone! Please help me provide my students with the materials they need to be successful in their in-person learning! After a year and a half of distance learning, returning back to campus is definitely an adjustment. As fifth-graders, my students are tested more than they have ever been–this is the first year they get tested in Science and PE. Additionally, my students are still adjusting to using their Chromebooks to facilitate their learning.

This project will provide a set of classroom chargers so my students can charge their Chromebooks and water bottles so they can keep themselves hydrated throughout the day.

The school does not have any extra chargers and most of my students have either lost or damaged their original chargers. There is one of each that is shared amongst the class and it makes using their Chromebooks to do classwork and homework very difficult. The water bottles are so the students can refill it and have ready when they need to hydrate. Due to COVID precautions, the school does not have water fountains available for them to drink from. While disposable water bottles have worked, they run out very quickly. These water bottles with come in handy since every week we practice running 1-mile to prepare them for the state PE exam.
