About My Students

Hector is one of those students whose curiosity and excitement for learning is immense. He needs a challenge, and devours any book, puzzle, or activity you put in front of them.

A few weeks ago, Hector began reading nearly every interesting book in our library. When he came to me saying there were "no more interesting books" I began to think. And then it occurred to me: the donors choose community has made so much possible for my students, why not have Hector build us a library? I told Hector about student-centered projects, that all he had to do was pick out the most interesting and visual books he could find, and write down a proposal. He had it done by the end of the day.

Hector an I picked out books that are engaging, interesting, and highly visual so that every student has access to a classroom library that will help them not only to learn about fascinating concepts in science but also to cultivate an interest in reading itself. For Hector and his classmates, it will also be a lesson in how to take responsibility for our classroom materials and manage their use by setting up and running our classroom library.

In Their Own Words

The goal that we are trying to accomplish is to get books that will help my class mates learn but not just by reading but also by giving us very visual examples of what the book is trying to show us because we need a different way of learning, called visual learning. That is our goal to help all of my class mates learn in a better way.

I have put together a list of books that I think will be great to have in our classroom library. I will be in charge of being the manager of our library and creating a sign out system for when kids want to borrow the books.

The problem this project will help to solve is to keep me and my classmates interested in reading and in science. Our school does not have many interesting books that are good for every student and these books will help to make our classroom a better place to learn.
