My Project

This summer, I had the opportunity to read and learn more about Alan Gratz's historical novels. It was so refreshing to read about young adults experiencing history. I would love to bring some of his exciting novels into my classroom.

Helping my students improve their reading comprehension, and vocabulary and expand their knowledge of history is always a challenge - but with the help of these books, I know I can accomplish all three.

Many of my students are below grade level in reading. It is a big task to help these students bridge that gap so they may be successful on the state assessments. With that in mind, I work with the ELA department to ensure I focus on the necessary ELA skills in my Social Studies classroom. Gratz's historical novels are well-written and focus on the historical themes that are covered this year.

I intend to use these books along with my US History curriculum materials. My students will receive background information on the topic and then use these books to delve deeper into the historical period. Since the characters in the books are young adults, my students will be able to relate to them and better understand the historical content.

I am excited to expand my classroom library and read Gratz’s novels with my students. With your help, I know this idea will become a reality.
