My Students

My students need to love reading! Students who don't speak English are the most likely group of students to not graduate high school. Through these graphic novels, students will deepen their content knowledge of classic literature as well as enhance their reading ability.

My students rock!

They are from all over the world! My students arrive to me hungry to learn from Yemen, Syria, Pakistan, Bangladesh, The Dominican Republic, Haiti, Chile, Colombia, and Japan (just to name a few). School is their gateway to success, but first they must learn English. Many come illiterate in their first language or have escaped war and tragedy. They arrive in my classroom with open minds and open hearts. These students face an uphill battle unknown to many in the education system and through something as simple as reading graphic novels they can start their journey to English fluency in my classroom. Through these books their imaginations run wild and with it a love of learning ensues.

My Project

My students need graphic novels such as The Call of the Wild, Black Beauty, and A Wrinkle in Time. These books will be used as supplementary materials to give students the chance to fall in love with reading. The demands of a regular school day on a student who does not speak, read, or write the language can become overwhelming. Many feel they cannot complete what is asked of them and start to hate English for this reason. My ESL students need time to engage with English text in a nonthreatening way. By using these books with my students as independent reading materials, I am giving them the resources they need to love learning and reading. Keeping a positive relationship with English could mean graduation or dropping out for many of these kids. Let's get them to love to learn to read and use English!

This donation will help improve my classroom by giving students choice and ownership of their reading materials and at the same time increase their fluency and reading comprehension.

All students need materials that are at the appropriate reading level. ESL students are often over looked or given children's books that are insulting to interact with. Through these young adult graphic novels, students will be able to follow the story line, interact with text, and deepen their love for learning.
