My Students

My class is a second grade, ESL class. That means that all of my students learned, or are learning, English as a second language. Many of my students have just come to this country. They enter school feeling lost. They need books that they can relate to and enjoy reading.

I work in an extremely impoverished area.

My students have seen and dealt with more in their short lives that most adults will ever have to experience. My students are bright, curious, and full of life. My students come from all over the world. I have students from Guyana, Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic, and various countries in West Africa. Many of my students came straight from their native country and entered my school knowing little to no English. I can only imagine what that feels like to a 6 or 7 years old child.

My Project

Last school year, I purchased a book about the Muslim holiday Ramadan. That book instantly became the most popular book in my classroom library. Children waited and waited to get their chance to read it! When I sat back and observed this, it confirmed the notion that children need to feel a connection to what they are reading. They have to be interested in a book in order to want to read it. When my students are given high interest books that they can relate to, they are overly eager to read and learn. It's truly amazing how quickly they pick up the language when they are motivated and interested in what they are reading. I would like to afford this opportunity to every student in my class. I have chosen 20 different books about all of the countries that my students are from. The books are on grade level, child friendly, and filled with fun facts and interesting information.

With your support, I could have books that my students want to read.

If the one book that I purchased last year about Ramadan was such a smash hit, imagine what 20 more books like that would do for my students! Myself, as well as my students, would be incredibly grateful to receive these books.
