Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Give this project a boost!
A chain reaction of support starts with one share.
I teach students who have recently arrived to the country how to speak English and how to develop their English literacy skills. I teach at an urban middle school in San Francisco, and my students come from all over the world and they have diverse needs; however, they all need to build their English literacy skills!
Working with this population of students is challenging because they come from diverse educational backgrounds and they have varying English language skills.
Some of my students speak absolutely no English when they arrive while others have some knowledge of English. Finding materials that they can access is always a challenge!
My Project
At our school, we value literacy skills and expect all of our students to find just right books to read every day. All English teachers at my school designate classroom time for independent reading. Because I want my English Language Learners to have the same experiences as their peers in the general education classroom, I require them to read as well. I believe that reading every day will help develop their literacy skills both in English and in their native language. However, I have many reluctant readers and my hope is to create a listening station that will engage them. Because they are still learning the language, I am asking for lower level books so that students do not get frustrated and give up on reading.
The donation of audio books will improve my classroom because I will be able to offer students an alternative way of reading.
Some of them can't sit still to read for 20 minutes, but they can when I read a story to them. So, I believe that they will be engaged by listening to stories being read to them. Also, they will be able to follow along with the words and listen to how the words are being pronounced in English.
