This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Ms. Carrion's Class is Wild About Learning! As students walk into the classroom every morning they are greeted with that message on the door. Every form of motivation helps my 2nd graders from the beginning of the day until dismissal each day.

Our school is a Title l school.

All of our students receive free lunch. As an educator in our community, I have realized that my English Language Learners need various resources and materials to help them achieve his/her full potential to learn. Dealing with the common core state standards that each student must meet and the rigorous complex text that are required while teaching a self-contained class of 32 ESL second graders is not an easy task! Though it may be a challenge to teach my students all the expected standards, the greatest challenge of all is the one my students face. They begin every day with the challenge of having a language barrier. Ninety-five percent of the time, the only person they come in contact with that speaks English is myself and perhaps an older sibling.

My Project

During class, we read complex text as a whole through shared reading. During the read aloud, all of the students are given the opportunity to be introduced to texts which are above grade level. Students are introduced to vocabulary and also attempt to answer higher order thinking questions. Teaching ESL students, I have realized that they need to listen to stories and vocabulary more than once before they can grasp and truly understand the text and vocabulary. Having a listening center will give my students the opportunity to listen to a text again independently or with a small group and help with deeper discussions about a topic. Having a class of 32 students, I've realized how time can be wasted untangling wires from headphones and that's why I'm asking for wireless headphones. Every minute in our class is a valuable one that must be used for learning!
