Hi! I am a 6th grade English as a Second Language (ESL) teacher in a very poor area of Brooklyn, NY. My class is a very multicultural group of beginning-level English Language Learners. The most difficult aspect of learning English for my students is writing properly. I don't have any writing curriculum at my school, so I have always created my own units of study and writing projects. However, my mother, who is a first grade teacher in Minnesota, told me about the writing curriculum she uses in her school that is wonderful. It's called "Units of Study for Primary Writing" by Lucy Calkins. She told me that she has never in her life had a group of students who are as into writing as this group is with this new writing curriculum. Her version is for students in Kindergarten to second grade. Lucy Calkins just came out with a new unit that is geared towards students in third to fifth grade that became available in May 2006. That level would be perfect for my class. It focuses on mechanics, assessment, and student collaboration through narrative and expository writing. This resource is exactly what I need to teach my students writing this year and every other year to come. Please help my dream of building a classroom of more proficient writers become a reality. Thank you!
