My Students

I teach 30 refugee students from around the world.

All of my students have had their formal education interrupted and they are all 3-5 years behind in their academic abilities. Although we know it takes student 5-7 years to become proficient enough in English to truly succeed academically, English language learners in New York are required to take state exams, and expected to pass them, by the end of their second year enrolled in our schools. My students work incredibly hard, but they really need to learn test taking as a skill.

My Project

I would like to get a review book for each one of my students. We would use this review book to learn how to take a test. We would also use it to learn which types of questions students do poorly on and target those more. This practice would help my students gain confidence and succeed on the state exams.

State exams are terrifying for students who are not fluent in English and have not mastered the content of the class.

By taking the time to prepare for the exam students will be more comfortable when walking into the exam and they will at least have an idea of where to start when presented with a challenging question.
