Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

While we remain grateful for how technology has kept us connected for the past two years, our students have spent much of this time with their eyes on a laptop or tablet. This school year, my goal is to provide a reprieve from the screen for students. They need actual books in their hands!

I hope to create a library filled with diverse books, so students can see themselves reflected in the characters and stories they read.

Our neighborhood in Queens is one of the most ethnically diverse, with students hailing anywhere from Ecuador to Nepal to Guinea. Reading books with characters from different cultures ensures that students are both able to learn more about their own cultures, as well as the cultures of others. I’d also like to add more picture books and graphic novels to our library, so we’d have high-interest books that even our most reluctant readers would want to read.
