Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My scholars are special because they are all ENL students who are learning both language and academic content at the same time. Each child is commanding their second language at a different proficiency level.

Being a teacher encompasses being a provider, motivator, facilitator, counselor, cheerleader, among many other titles.

Even though this is a challenging task, all scholars enter the classroom each day with a smile and an eagerness to learn. Each day I wake up ready to share my knowledge to help them get closer to reaching their academic success.

My Project

The books that I have selected will allow my classroom to become more print rich and allow the students to build their foundational skills of literacy. Since I am a third grade classroom teacher, the books that are provided are above the students' independent reading levels. The box sets of A-F will allow me to teach my non-readers how to read, in addition, it gives them access to books on their level of comprehensible input. These lower level books also teach the sight words needed to develop reading fluency. The books chosen also provide great visuals for the ENL students. I have a total of 24 students in my classroom, 8 are non-readers, 7 are on a first grade reading level, 7 are on a second grade reading level, and 2 are on a third grade reading level. The books will be accessible to the majority of the students in my classroom.

In order for bilingual students to receive an equitable education, they must have access to literacy development: “An equal education is not a fair education for all students because they come to school with different needs and different backgrounds”.

The dry erase pockets will allow students to work on the development of their writing and vocabulary. The dry erase pockets will be used in my centers. The students love using dry erase markers and being able to "write and wipe" which is more interactive. The rolling cart of colorful drawers will be used to organize different literacy centers. The file organizers will allow me to store different writing templates for the students to have access to. The pink rolling cart will be used to store the leveled books for guided reading.
