Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Creating models is an important step to understanding scientific concepts. My students love to let their creative side shine as they model concepts such as electron transfer, volcanic eruptions, ecosystems, or the water cycle. My students crave more art materials to create better models.

I teach around ninety 6th grade students every day, and support a middle school afternoon STEM Club.

My students come from all across the District of Columbia to attend our public charter school. To attend, students simply have to apply and win a lottery system, there is no achievement requirement. With students from every ward of the district, we have a huge range of diversity within our classrooms, including many ELL and special education students. The students are enthusiastic and ready to learn. They truly enjoy hands-on and minds-on experiences, often naming them as the "high" of the day in afternoon advisory. My goal is to continue providing these enriching experiences for my students.

My Project

The Next Generation Science Standards place an emphasis on students creating models of many scientific concepts. This is an excellent way for artistic and creative students to master the material. I hope to get supplies to help my students create detailed and thorough models. These supplies include chart paper, index cards, and colored cardstock for displaying drawn models of different sizes, and both colored pencils and markers so students can add details in color. Students can use the clay, stones, pipe cleaners, along with other supplies already in our classroom, to create three dimensional models. Some topics we hope to model include types of volcanoes, types of faults, DNA structure and reproduction, electron transfer when molecules are made, and chemical reactions. Modeling these concepts will help students see the abstract concepts more clearly, and creating models will reinforce what they have read in textbooks.

With these supplies, all of my students will be able to participate in the creation and sharing of models.

Since many of the supplies are reusable, students year after year will be able to benefit from these modeling tools. Please help my students visualize abstract concepts while stretching their creative minds!
