Help Mrs. Farrell

I am a first grade teacher at a Title One School in a school district that is impacted by severe economic issues. Over 30% of our student population participates in our free breakfast and lunch program. Over 30% of our student population are English Language Learners. So, you can see that our families come from a wide range of socioeconomic backgrounds. I want my students to become more proficient in their reading and writing. I want them to enjoy the magic of reading and have the power to communicate in a written form. The tools that I am requesting break down reading and writing into smaller tasks to support all developmental levels. The resources that will help achieve these goals are components of the Learning Resources Reading Rods program. This program offers developmentally appropriate skills by using manipulatives, which I believe is a most important factor in student learning. Reading Rods provide students with hands-on activities that progressively reinforce reading and writing by using activity cards and individual sets of word rods. Students can progress at their own developmental level. I have experienced that children learn best by doing, not by watching. I want my students to help guide their own learning and build the self confidence that comes from achieving success. Help me create Reading Rambos and Writing Wizards who have the power to learn!
