This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
We are a Title I school that offers free breakfast and lunch to all children. Our second-grade scholars live in a high-poverty neighborhood. Our community is located in an inner-city area. About 85% of our students identify as African American, 5% Latino, 2% White, 1% Asian, and 9% multi-racial.
Labels and test scores do an injustice to our scholars and teachers.
My scholars and I refuse to accept failure. If you could see our children, you would understand that they are full of potential and that they are future leaders and innovators. Our students persevere, and they are motivated, enthusiastic, and driven to succeed. We will bridge the poverty gap, and they will achieve!
My Project
All students want to succeed and our second grade scholars are no exception!
Our scholars are working hard to learn new, and sometimes challenging, concepts in math.
Some of our children are really struggling with base ten concepts, addition and subtraction. We need hands-on manipulatives to support the learning of these concepts. We will use the ten-frames playing cards and magnetic ten-frames set to build number sense and fact fluency. We will be using the Rekenreks to support the same skills in a different way. The number lines and markers will help us with adding on, counting up, and subtracting. With your help, we can become math masters!
