Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students need the tools to discover their creative side through ceramics. As high school students they need to see that they are creative and they can take their creativity into any future career as a valuable asset to employers. chevron

My students are in high school and range from grades 9 - 12.

Most of them are eager to be taking ceramics. My students come from a low income environment and feel the pressure of everyday life having to take care of siblings, having a job and all while doing well in high school so that they are career or college ready when the graduate, because of this they see art as a fun and creative outlet in their day. My students are eager to learn and complete projects but it is hard for them to do when we do not have enough tools for everyone to use and there is down time while they patiently wait for classmates to finish with a tool. They are often discouraged by this downtime and their creative flow is interrupted. While our technology is simple in ceramics these tools are very valuable and will help them learn about ceramics integrated with cultural and cross curriculum integration.

My Project

My students will use the plaster molds, wooden tool sets, sgraffito tools, metal scrapers to create several different projects. These projects will be an organic pod project that will be inspired from to biology and nature. My students will be looking up scientific images that relate to one of these subjects to create their own sculptural pod that relates to biology or nature. Students will also create a sculpture that is inspired by a current social issue that they are interested in or feel passionate about. While it may seem like ordering only one potters wheel would not make a difference, it really does. One more wheel added to the few that we have makes a difference as that is just one more student that will have a chance to work on one. Students will love working on the wheel and for some this is where they fall in love with ceramics. Here students further learn about creating functional pottery that also has fun and interesting forms.

The addition of these tools adds to productivity and overall enjoyment of the class.

This will cause students to be able to create better projects and build their confidence in their own creativity. In today's job market employers are looking for creative individuals in all fields and if my students have confidence that they truly are creative individuals they can take that into the career of their choice improving their chances of being hired in that job.
