My Students

Do you remember how proud you were when you first learned how to write, cut out a project, or tie your own shoes? For my kids, these tasks can seem almost impossible. Occupational Therapy helps them build the foundations they need to master these skills in order for them to succeed in school!

I work in a public special education school in Brooklyn, New York.

Many of my students have Autism, Intellectual Disabilities, or other developmental delays that make learning in a typical classroom difficult. Our school provides them with smaller special education classes and the extra support through therapy, counseling, and individualized attention so that they can reach their highest potential.

My Project

Think about how hard it is to sit at a desk all day, especially when you are a kid and want to move. Now add attention deficit disorders and sensory processing difficulties into the mix, and you've got a big problem for learning! Although we have some specialized equipment in our therapy room, our students need the equipment in the classrooms to have their sensory needs met in the moment during learning. Wobble chairs and air cushions will provide extra opportunities for movement for children who have difficulty sitting still, giving them a functional outlet to move while learning. Noise canceling headphones provide a safe space for children who have heightened auditory sensitivities, decreasing the distractions in their environments. By giving students the tools they need to help them focus, they will be able to better engage in lessons.

Creating a "lending library" of therapeutic equipment that can go out into the classrooms will help improve attention and accessibility to learning throughout the day.

This equipment is especially important for our students who have increased difficulty sitting and learning when their specific needs are not met.
