My students come from a variety of social, economic, and educational backgrounds. One of the things that unites them is their need for specialized instruction and individual academic and social-emotional support.
The things we do in my classroom are focused on helping them not just "learn the material", but more importantly develop a love and a desire for lifelong learning.
We work hard in my classroom, and I often ask my students to stretch themselves more than they have in the past academically and socially. I encourage them to work hard in all of their classes, take responsibility for their actions and emotions, and set goals and make plans to achieve those goals.
COVID-19 has especially impacted my students' ability to engage with their peers both in and out of the classroom. For many of my students, being required at various times to learn remotely has only caused them to fall farther behind academically. Even though most of them have been told they're "bad students" (whether implicitly or explicitly) at some point in their education, my goal is to help them realize their full potential and succeed in and out of the classroom.
My Project
We are a group of diverse learners covering a variety of subjects. Each of the materials chosen for this project will help students learn more about science, math, English, and positively interacting with those around them. Learning activities provided with these materials will not only help students learn important concepts at their pace, but also help them in collaborative learning activities with their peers.
Students will have opportunities to see abstract concepts come to life in the classroom.
Whether it be a model of the Earth they can hold in their hands, or a microscope that will make some of the smallest things seem big, everything is meant to help my students understand complex topics. Games that may or may not be familiar to my students will encourage teamwork, collaborative learning, and the development of important life skills like planning, deduction, and good sportsmanship.
