Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My school is a struggling school. We are trying to do our best with a lack of resources to support our students in the way that they need. One out of every five students in our school lacks permanent housing and 25% have special needs. 84% of our students are at or below the federal poverty line! Those are the depressing statistics that only tell one side of their story.

Our students genuinely love everything about geek culture; they talk, live and breathe it.

Their eyes light up whenever I spend time talking about cool technology or scientific breakthroughs. Sadly, most of them have never been exposed to science in ways that spark their imagination.

My Project

This project is to give my kids access to cell biology materials that they need for our honors class. Our students need to see real world applications that will encourage them to pursue careers in science.

Transformation and selection of bacteria are key steps in DNA cloning.

DNA cloning is the process of making many copies of a specific piece of DNA, such as a gene. The copies are often made in bacteria.

In a typical cloning experiment, my students will first insert a piece of DNA, such as a gene, into a circular piece of DNA called a plasmid. This step uses restriction enzymes and DNA ligase and is called a ligation. After a ligation, the next step is to transfer the DNA into bacteria in a process called transformation. Then, we can use antibiotic selection and DNA analysis methods to identify bacteria that contain the plasmid we’re looking for.
