Help Create a Calming Learning Environment for Rural Mathematicians

My Project

My 5th and 6th grade middle school math students are creative, funny, and unique in their personalities and talents. Adjusting to middle school can be hard, and at this age it is common for anxiety and other emotional challenges to make it even more difficult.

The calming sensory items will help to create an environment that reduces some of my students' stressors.

The project includes a variety of items such as kick bands for student chairs, colored pencils for affirmation coloring, air diffusers for calming scents, and light covers to help reduce harsh overhead lighting. These supplies will significantly help students who need additional opportunities to move and fidget to learn, and those who may be overwhelmed in school environments. By being given tools to aid in self-regulation and sensory processing, my math students will be able to focus better on learning the concepts and skills they need to be successful in their education.
