Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"Everybody Clap Your Hands!" Students begin class with a social dance to build community before choreographing their own work. The students learn dances from around the world, including West African, Salsa, the Waltz and Bollywood. Through dancing, students learn about themselves and the world.

My students are international, English language learners from over 30 different countries.

Our school is in a large city with 100% of students qualifying for free and reduced lunch. Dance company students are adapting to life in a major U.S. city, learning everything from public transportation to how to apply to college, while also learning English. Dance provides them with a physical outlet and form of artistic expression, while also encouraging them to be agents of change!

My Project

Dance Company members are currently rehearsing for their holiday performance which includes over 7 different dances! The dancers are choreographing and learning dances from different genres and multiple cultures. Students in the Dance Company come from Haiti, Mexico, the Dominican Republic, Honduras, Senegal and Bangladesh. Through learning dances from one another's countries, they also create a strong community and build respect for one another's cultures and backgrounds.

Having costumes will help create a professional performance while also rewarding students for their work.

The Dance Company rehearses 6 times a week, twice after school and four times a week in the mornings. Being able to perform in professional looking costumes will encourage students as they continue to rehearse and dedicate themselves to Dance.
