My Students

In the Gettysburg address, Abraham Lincoln stated: "It is rather for us to be here dedicated to the great task remaining before us." We are using the magic of theatre to explore this "great task," as it relates to the time of The Civil War, and to our experiences in present day America.

The student population at our school is quite varied.

My students are full of energy. They have diverse ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds, and they have diverse learning needs. Our students come from all walks of life, and every one of our classrooms contains English Language Learners and students with special needs. We are an elementary school with an arts focus, and we believe that theatre has the unique power to engage our diverse learning community. Theatre provides our young people with an opportunity to closely work together, to build friendships and community, and to deeply explore and engage with a text and performance of their own creation. Our students are smart, inquisitive, eager, and are always excited to express thoughtful ideas through new, innovative, and artistic platforms.

My Project

This year, our students are writing their very own musical about The Civil War and its effects on our past and present. The students write every single component of the musical. They come up with the idea for our story, they conduct research, they write the dialogue, and they write the lyrics. After an intensive and collaborative writing process, the students then get the challenging and exceptionally empowering experience of performing their very own work. They have worked extraordinarily hard to tell a story authentic to two periods of time. My students are thinking deeply, both intellectually and emotionally, to share new perspectives on the Civil War, through theatre. The premise of the show, our students have designed, is: Three Civil War monuments have been defaced, and the news crew at Whoooo's News wants to know why? The cast of Civil Shadows takes us on a journey through the Civil War era, to find out just what injustices of the past reflect on the future.

The experience of writing your own musical and being able to share it with the world, is a life changing and empowering one.

Your donation will allow our young people to be able to wear authentic costumes for the time and events they have been so deeply entrenched in studying and creating onstage. You will, additionally, make a significant impact, by empowering my students to confidently perform their own writing, in front of their entire school community, as well as for their families and friends.
