Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I am a high school social studies teacher in an inner-city Houston school. Many of our students have been hit by the devastation as a result of Hurricane Harvey. In addition, I am working in a brand-new program at our school designed to help those students who have fallen 2-3 years behind to get back on track in order to graduate with their class. Many of the students we serve in our program, Project Beyond Belief, fare additional struggles because they are teen parents, living in a non-traditional family situation, and are often the breadwinners for their families. These kids have not been successful in the traditional school setting. We at CHS sought to remedy this situation by creating a non-traditional program that will ensure student success! These students rotate between 4 core area teachers (English, Math, Science, and Social Studies) in order to receive face-to-face instruction as well as support for online credit recovery courses during the day as well as instruction from a graduation coach. Additionally, the program focuses on social skills and emotional well-being. Other staff within our program are two dropout prevention specialists, social workers, and counselors.

My Project

Getting this project funded will mean the world to my students and me. Far too often my students are not afforded opportunities to leave their neighborhoods. By securing subscriptions to the New York Times Upfront, it will allow my students to be on the same playing field as other students with more opportunities available to them. My students will be able to read about things that matter to them and that matter to the nation and to the world. These magazines will allow my students to be more informed, thus becoming more globally aware. Please help my students to become citizens of the world!
