My Students

At my school, almost 70% of the kids live in poverty. I work with some who have faced extremely difficult situations and others who just need a boost to get through the day. Yet in spite of it all, they are some of the most resilient and enthusiastic kids I have ever met, and they deserve the best!

As the school social worker, many of my kids I work with lack the social, problem-solving, and emotional-regulation skills to be successful at school.

They may be diagnosed with Mental Health or Developmental Disorders such as Depression, Bipolar Disorder, Autism Spectrum Disorder, or Cognitive Impairments. As a result, many of the things you and I take for granted, such as understanding social cues, dealing with stress, or having friendships, are extremely difficult for my students. Unfortunately, they tend to get wrapped up in bullying situations or fights more than other students. As you can imagine, this means my students often get into trouble at school or may feel disconnected from school altogether due to their struggles. However, if they are taught these crucial skills, they can be just as successful as any of their peers!

My Project

Using books is a great way for my students to see how others handle challenging situations in a nonjudgmental, nonthreatening way. It allows them think of solutions to other peoples' problems without making them feel attacked or singled out and gives them a model for how they can change their own behavior in the future. Teaching through books also allows my students to be exposed to additional vocabulary and language that they may not usually be exposed to at home, which can help their academic skills as well and make them feel successful in the classroom. This is where we need your help! We would love to be able to update the very dated social work library that we currently have. So many of the books are so old that students have a hard time paying attention or relating to the characters ("What's a TYPEWRITER, Mrs. D?") We're hoping to get lots of new books about topics my students face everyday: bullying, homework trouble, teasing, tattling, friendship, and many more!

Within my classroom, I strive to create an environment that demonstrates to all my students that their differences and challenges are accepted.

I love watching their faces light up when they realize that they ARE able to succeed in the classroom. These students are our future, and I am committed to helping them learn the skills they will need to succeed and realize their own potential to change the world around them.
