My Students

I believe that reading books that students see themselves, their families, friends and community members in could help improve students' interest in reading. Some of my students are diagnosed with “speech or language impairment, emotional disturbance, and intellectual disability,” and other various learning differences. I've notice that my students are not interested in reading most of the books provided to them.

That is until I started reading aloud, books like "Each Kindness, The Other Side, and If You Come Softly, " by Jacqueline Woodson to the students.

The students became very involved in the reading and asked to read the books on their own. I believe that if students are exposed to books that they could relate to, see themselves, their family, friends and community in, they would be more incline to read.

Books such as Jamaica and Brianna, I Love My Hair, and Hip Hop Speaks to Children could help students see themselves, family, friends and community members in the characters, encourage and develop better reading habits, improve reading stamina and comprehension skills. The books you donate to our students will improve their self-worth too because they are will see themselves in what they read.

My Project

I believe that with the donation of these books for my students, you will expose my students to more reading materials, genres and foster a love for self and of reading. As students are exposed to more reading materials, and genres that they see themselves in, their self-worth and interest in reading will improve. Students will acquire and develop self-awareness, phonemic awareness skills, manipulate patterns to advance reading skills, grow reading fluency, and expand vocabulary exposure.

Books such as My Nana and Me, When God Made Light, Kickoff!, and Two Friends: Susan B.

Anthony and Frederick Douglass will not only grab the students attention because they can see themselves in those books, but with exposed to a wide variety of reading materials, and genres, students might overcome some of their reading difficulties. Students will be allowed to select their own reading materials from the choice that you are helping to buy. I believe that having books that students can see themselves in will improve their self-worth, reading stamina, and comprehension, while fostering a love for reading in the long-term.
