My Students

Help us build our classroom library with a wide variety of books, so that all of my students will learn to love reading, Many of my students have had negative experiences in reading, and have all but given up. I know they just need to meet the right book!

While many of my students have books at home and make regular trips to the library, many more do not.

I have noticed that my struggling readers gravitate toward non fiction topics, such as soldiers and war, animals, and disasters. They love adventure stories as well as graphic novels. I have had the pleasure of watching them read a graphic novelization of a classic, such as Treasure Island, then check out the book at the library or ask their parents to buy it for them! My students attend a small, Title I school in California, where a high percentage of the students qualify for a free or reduced price lunch. Many are from single-parent families. In spite of the many obstacles my students face, they are eager to succeed and hungry to learn as much as they can.

My Project

Imagine children, even reluctant readers, choosing books, sharing them with friends, then discussing the books, all on their own and of their free will. In my classroom, I have seen this happen every single year. A rich, full library with a variety of topics of interest to boys and girls provides the opportunity for every child to find a book they'll want to read. I have seen students choose books and share them over and over again with each other. This is possible because I have worked hard to provide a wide variety of choices and topics in my classroom library, so that every student can find something they want to read. Books and other reading materials must be replenished often, however, and this is why I need your help.

This project is so important, because it's the struggling readers who will fall further and further behind as they progress through school.

We cannot let our children fall through the cracks, and the more books and resources we have in the classroom, they more interested and engaged they will be. Books of all kinds and the love of reading are the keys to lifelong success.
